Neighborhood Description | Alamo Placita

Alamo Placita is a small, historical, central Denver neighborhood. Originally known as Arlington Park, the park itself is former prairie land on the banks of Cherry Creek, adjacent to today’s Speer Boulevard. You’d never guess, driving by this small-but-stately park, that it opened in 1862 at the center of a theatrical production that would rival today’s entire Denver Theater Complex. The production was called “The Last Days of Pompeii”. It involved 300 actors and a 54-ft-tall model of Mt. Vesuvius and was attended by an estimated 12,000 people. At the end of the 1800s, it was briefly reimagined as an amusement park so popular that it was known as “the Coney Island of the West,” but it was destroyed by fire in 1901. The drama faded, but the park remained. It’s now mostly surrounded by late 1800s-to-early/mid1900s homes from its more flamboyant eras, as well as a few mid-1900s apartment buildings. Eternally charming, this community remains highly popular because of its central location, lovely homes, and fabulous walkability to some of the most notable shopping, restaurant, and culture-rich areas in central Denver
